PREREQUISITE COURSES: Phonological Development and Disorders (2nd Semester), 
Diagnostic Topics in Speech and Language Therapy (4th Semester)
 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to provide speech-language therapy to children under the supervision of a clinical instructor, and specifically to:

  • Observe, distinguish, and document verbal and non-verbal communication in both typical and atypical populations
  • Conduct interviews using the appropriate case history forms
  • Perform orofacial (oral–motor) examinations in children
  • Administer standardized assessment tools and implement informal assessment tests related to pediatric speech-language disorders
  • Understand the differences among various assessment tools for children
  • Analyze case histories and assessment results and draw appropriate conclusions
  • Formulate speech-language therapy goals
  • Write long-term and short-term goals, assessment reports, session plans, and SOAP notes
  • Apply speech-language therapy techniques and collect data during therapy sessions
  • Systematically update the patient’s file within the clinical setting in which the therapy is conducted

SYLLABUS

Course Short Description

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to clinical experience. Within this framework, students will, under supervision, develop foundational clinical skills, including conducting a parent interview (case history taking), performing an orofacial examination in children, using both standardized and non-standardized assessment tools, writing long-term and short-term goals, preparing evaluation reports, developing session plans, applying speech-language therapy techniques, and collecting data during therapy sessions. Students will also be expected to write SOAP notes at the end of each session and revise them with their supervisor. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to practice these skills in class and discuss clinical cases during two-hour sessions. This clinical practicum focuses on pediatric cases of any disorder.

The course is organized into 13 units:

  • Clinical practicum and practices in Speech-Language Therapy
  • Professional behavior of the clinical student: the supervisor and the clinician
  • Parent interview
  • Taking developmental/language/communication history
  • Conducting an orofacial (oral–motor) examination
  • Use of non-standardized and standardized assessment methods
  • Learning difficulties: presentation of assessment methods (e.g., ATHINA TEST, Speech-Language Assessment Protocol for School-Age Children)
  • Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Assessment
  • Writing short-term and long-term goals / SOAP notes
  • Writing the evaluation report
  • Application of speech-language therapy techniques / Data collection during the session
  • Case presentations by each student (portfolio)

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

50% of the final grade will be based on a written final examination
(which will include short-answer questions, multiple-choice questions, and clinical case scenarios)

The remaining 50% of the grade will come from:
(a) each student’s case presentations through their portfolio (10%)
(b) ability to manage clinical cases within the clinical setting (20%)
(c) individual assignments (10%)
(d) student file/portfolio (10%)
